Daryl Bryant proposed to Sophie Huntingford after three years of being together, having met at a mutual friend's birthday party. “He was very tall and handsome so he'd already caught my eye,” says Sophie. When the night was over, Daryl offered to walk her home. Sophie explains, “This didn't go well as I refused to take off my five inch heels, so over his shoulder I went and he carried me all the way back.”
Daryl popped the question at the top of the Empire State Building in December, 2014. After having been diagnosed with testicular cancer in January that year and getting the all clear in July, he decided that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with the woman he loved and that New York would be the perfect opportunity to propose. “It was a total surprise,” says Sophie. “As far as I was aware we were there to see out a rubbish year with a bang.”
The happy couple set the date for 12th June, 2017 at the Gate Street Barn in Guildford.
Here, Sophie tells us more about the special day...
The views were stunning with pheasants wandering along the road, the setting was just what we were looking for and they allowed us to have our dog there on the day, so it was a no-brainer!
We opted for a pastel colour scheme so we had a range of milk churns, peonies and lisianthus – just to name a few – around the venue and hanging from the chandeliers in the main barn. These are my favourite flowers and were also in my bouquet.
Handmade by my aunt, our cake had crafted sugar flowers that matched the arrangements. We decided to have a fruit cake bottom and the rest just a dummy cake but we had a lemon sponge and carrot cake cut up in the kitchen to come out as dessert.
I knew I wanted a fitted dress as I'm quite curvy and a ball gown made me look wider. I knew I'd found the one when I tried on Karolina from Enzoani! I decided to go all-out with a cathedral-length veil for the added wow factor.
Daryl's brother was his best man and he knew his speech off-by-heart – he even had props, it was brilliant!
Both our dads decided that it was a good day to have a few too many beers. We also made our dog a flower collar, which everybody loved and was very cute!
All of the groomsmen matched Daryl; he knew he wanted a three-piece suit and we decided navy was the best colour on him.
