Five minutes with Surrey's Ever After Cakes

In issue 75 of Your Surrey Wedding we showcased gorgeous wedding cakes from baking sister-duo Vicky and Lizzie of Ever After Cakes. Here we find out more about these baking gurus...

"We grew up relatively humbley, but heuristicly, on a council estate which we loved as we were free to play and explore," shares Vicky. "We had an abundance of natural greenery and an old airport near us with woods, rare flowers, birds and plenty of other children to play with.
"We were raised by the most caring parents. Our dad was a very talented craftsman/inventor and he really taught us well. We learned perspective, the build up of colour and movement and how to use our hands. We learned woodwork and model making and I have always baked and experimented with unusual flavours.

"My sister and I took different skills, I am a model maker and my sister is a painter/artist. She uses food colouring to create masterpieces on cakes! This also enables her to design cakes from scratch and offer couples a very good idea of how the finished cake will look.
"We ended up working together by accident. Our dad is so proud of us. We entered Cake International and were awarded bronze at the NMC a few years ago and Lizzie's painting was classified 'World Class' by one of the oldest judges at this competition.

"Lizzie's design was also chosen by the president of Euro Disney last year and we were commissioned to produced a Disney cake with all the official characters for her 50th birthday celebrations in Knightsbridge, London. Boris Johnson ate our cake lol! 

"Our cakes tend to be a little different from others; artisan, whimsical, magical...when we are free to design them. Even if the customer has chosen a design, we always tend to put our own stamp on it where we can, changing leaves or flowers to personalise it to the trees and flowers we have here in the UK, matching the realism as closely as possible.

"Our company theme has an 'English country garden' feel to it and we aim for a luxury bespoke service. Our couples are offered a cake tasting experience full of posh China and bubbles or tea, with the cake of their choice freshly prepared. We sit informally in a 'Snug' by the garden and discuss cake and Lizzie gets her pencil out.

All cakes are completely edible handmade from scratch, by Vicky, and handpainted by Lizzie.
