Top tips for wedding planning by Victoria Judd, weddings and private dining coordinator at Surrey's five-star Pennyhill Park.

.First thing's first, finding your venue! Make sure you book this and your suppliers as soon as you can to avoid disappointment – most venues are booked around X months in advance, so do take this into consideration.

.Hold your preferred date with your venue, then check with the registrar their availability before confirming. Each venue is only licensed with one registry office, and so if they can't do your date, it's a no go!

.Set your budget-and do your best to stick to it! A spreadsheet is a great way of monitoring your spend and seeing where you have made savings which can be moved over to cover other costs. Avoid temptation to overspend by refining your searches to within your allocated budget for each item.

.Always ask questions! Use your coordinator's knowledge and experience to your advantage, we deal with these situations every day so will always have an answer or solution. No matter how silly you think the question is, we've probably heard it before!

.The most important one; you can't – and won't – please everyone. It's your day, so make sure you have everything how you would like it, and don't compromise to suit others.

.Centre your focus on the elements of the day that are most important to you. For example, if you are foodies, focus on the menu and make sure this is 100% as you would want it, as this is the part of the day that you, personally, will look back and remember.

.Adding personal touches can make a huge difference to ensuring you have a real unique wedding. It's great to take inspiration from other weddings, Pinterest etc. but putting your own twist on elements you have seen elsewhere will create a day that's truly bespoke to you as a couple.

.Ask friends and family for any help they can provide – it can go a long way. There is so much involved with planning a wedding, so don't feel that you have to do it all yourself and take any help you can get.

.Use social media, especially Pinterest, to your advantage. There are so many ideas available to brides that will get you thinking about things you never considered. From the overall look and theme of the day, to little touches like table settings and favours, there's so much to soak up from scrolling through social media.

.Reutilise your flowers and décor, it's such an expensive part of the day! Look at the flowers you have for your ceremony and see if they can be used for your wedding breakfast or why not add vases to the top table for your bridesmaids bouquets to go in?
