Make-up tips for beginners

I don’t usually wear make-up and feel confused by the variety of products available. What are the basics I need to know?

"It can be daunting not knowing where to start with the amount of choice that’s out there, but here are a few helpful explanations of what’s available.

"Primers: These prep your skin to ensure a flawless and smooth base that will keep your make-up in place all day.

"Concealer and foundation: Whether you wear it every day or just for special occasions, it’s good to have a liquid foundation or compact powder on hand to even out your skin tone. These come in many finishes from sheer to full coverage. Cream concealers are generally used to hide blemishes and under-eye circles.

"Mascara and eyeliner: Make your eyes pop with mascara to curl, lengthen, and add volume to your lashes. Use a soft kohl pencil to softly accent your eyes.

"Eyebrows: Your eyebrows are one of the most important features on your face. Shape, fill in, and define them with a pencil or simply groom and tame them with a clear gel.

"Bold and nude lipstick: No make-up bag is complete without a pair of versatile lip colours. A red, pink or similar bold shade along with a neutral shade that can take you from day to night or work for any occasion is a must-have.

"Brushes: The right tools are essential, and a few brushes along with a blending sponge and fingers are all you need.

"Blush, bronzer and highlighter: Give your complexion a touch of colour with a powder or cream blush and add a natural glow with a highlighter or bronzer (or both) depending on the look you prefer. If you lean towards minimal make-up, choose an illuminating powder instead.

"Eyeshadow Palette: A neutral eyeshadow palette will allow you to create a multitude of looks with ease. Some palettes even come with a double-ended brush."
